Colts owner Jim Irsay sets absurdly lofty goal of winning three straight Super Bowls
CBS Sports ^ | 2019-04-03 | by Sean Wagner-McGough

No team in the Super Bowl era -- including the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady Patriots -- has ever won three straight championships, but that didn't stop Colts owner Jim Irsay from setting back-to-back-to-back championships as his team's goal moving forward.

At the NFL league meetings last week, Irsay couldn't help but give his team an incredibly ambitious goal that they will almost certainly fall well short of -- and that's not a criticism of the Colts, a very good football team with a bright future. It's the reality of football. Winning one Super Bowl is hard enough. Winning three in a row is close to impossible.

Here's what Irsay had to say, via the Indianapolis Star's Zak Keefer:

"I really feel like this is a young team that's ascending," he said at the league meetings last week.

A few minutes later, he took it further: "You guys know, I will unabashedly say, I'd like to win three in a row. How hard is it? I mean, it's hard as hell just to win one."

My Buffalo Bills got there 4 times in a row. Winning one would have been nice. Winning 3 in a row will never happen.

Meanwhile, the Lions owner set a goal of winning six games.

He'd better not trade the kicker, he's the only one on the team that scores points.

Maybe he should just focus on winning his division first. That is a great goal! When he does that, then he can talk about it.

How hard is it? So hard that no team has ever done it. Maybe the Colts should just win one?

The Colts will be a force this season I think. Besides, that division sucks.

The division sucks, yes. But they have to get by the Patriots and the now-rising Chiefs.

The Cowboys won three outta four,,,,, if my memory serves me. Have the Patriots done that?

Oh, that was with the same team but different coaches too.

[[The Dolts are moving to the AAF?]]

Is the AAF out of business?

He means to win it for financial gain, only it may not be available. As they continue to lose patronage due to their stance on the flag, or lack of, they are in this mix not “selling” the sport to the fans that pay the bill.

Their TV revenues are up, but their attendance at the stadiums are down. And that doesn’t sell seats, boxes, pennants or popcorn. So the only way to combat the loss, is to make it up in individual ticket costs. And they will be playing for the TV at that point with less and less people in the stands.

And to be real honest, I don’t think an apology from millionaires is going to come very fast and I won’t accept it as one who they are stepping on by doing what they did.

I hope they fold like a lawn chair just like the AAF has terminated it’s players in early April and suspended play until they can find new investors. But it all has to do with how much integrity and love of this country the “fans” have. If they are true to this country and the anti-patriotic actions of the league players, lack of support is their only course to right the wrong that has been done. So we’ll see how much they have.

Oh, I agree. I wasn’t saying that I agreed with Irsay, just that the Colts have significantly improved and will continue to do so. Plus, their acquisition of Funchess (even though I’m not a big fan of his) should help considerably with Luck and Hilton. That offense will be humming.

Let’s see what they add to the defense through the draft.

Good grief, uncle jimmy is way off the wagon. I know the danger of alcohol and jimbo has been tipping too much.

Three in a row is tough if you are just dreaming about Division Titles, forget about Super Bowls and have another 18 year old bottle of scotch.

The Steelers won 4 outta 4, but had a two year hiatus between the first two and the second two. Three in a row is super tough.

I can’t stand Irsay. He thought Andrew Luck would be his golden boy...

so he didn’t care how he treated Peyton at the end of his Colts career.

Irsay acted like a loud mouth @ss, and I will always hold it against him.

And, I still say Luck is VASTLY OVERRATED.
