A Russian defense contractor has patented a drone that uses a shotgun to blast other drones out of the sky. It comes from Almaz Antey, a Russian defense contractor that manufactures the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile that caused a rift between Turkey and the US. The tail-sitting drone takes off on the spot but flies like an airplane for greater efficiency, giving it a 40-minute range while packing a fully-automatic Vepr-12 shotgun with a 10-round magazine.
A visor-wearing operator uses a live video link to fly the drone and aim the weapon, which is tucked into the nose of the aircraft. A shotgun, rather than a rifle or pistol, was selected for the same reason they're used for duck hunting: the wide dispersal pattern makes it easier to hit a target.

Remote controlled and drone aircraft of all types are changing warfare. Already I see the tactics of the last Gulf war the way we used to see the tactics of WWII.
But the change seems to be coming exponentially.
Who likes shotgunning things.
“We should have shotguns for this kind of deal”
Hmmm... remote controlled flying shot gun. I think I want one.
With 12 rounds!
This could be effective at times, but if a drone is used as a disposable surveillance tool that streams high-resolution video in real-time, the information of value has likely already been acquired by the time an attack drone can eliminate it. Even if it’s just a papparazi trying to spy on celebrities, a $1000 camera drone can transmit hi-res digital video anywhere within a 4 mile radius.
To provide absolute protection you’d need an automated air defense system that could recognize an incoming drone from any direction and kill it before it gets close enough to gather intelligence of value.
The Bidenski system.
Is a big f’n deal!
I imagine the flying shotgun could be used on all manner of soft targets. OO buck at 50 yards can be effective.
Be werey werey quiet, I’m hunting dwones.
A nice demonstration could be arranged to pop a few balloons at the next Antifa demonstration, possibly with a deterrent effect. Especially if there were a squadron of a dozen or so of them ;-)
My point is just that if a camera drone is being used to gather intelligence, chances are pretty good that the damage will have already been done by the time anythink knocks it down, and they are so cheap a nefarious user isn’t going to care.
Civilian fun-version would have a paint gun attached.
Pew, pew, pew...
The vertical takeoff and landing is really impressive. Almost instantaneous transition from vertical to horizontal flight. The forward canard seems to be the key to the transition.
The Oddball model.
Unarmed prototype
Shhhiiiiiddddd, I'd shoot the drone down just to get that gun!
I saw one on a tv drama. CSI NY, iirc. Except that it carried a machine gun. For the NYPD. And it was “borrowed” for an assassination.
I’m actually surprised it took the Russians this long to figure out how to do countermeasures against small drones. In the past, it was highly inadvisable to shoot down a drone because it would give away your defensive position; now, with a combat drone, it eliminates that problem.
