I walk with a cane. No actual need for it but the cane is one of the few remaining weapons you can take anywhere in the world, even on an airplane. Mine has a handle that came off of a hiker's walking stick, a tip you can buy at any hardware store or pharmacy and the body is 3/8" steel, spray painted black, like they used to use to run wires through or in fencing. It can break bones without even scratching the paint and it gives you the added advantage of an opponent's being more relaxed because it's just some guy with a cane who must be hobbled. I'm more worried about stray dogs than feral humans but it works just as well on either. If you want something sturdy but lighter you can always use good copper tubing and if you want a fancy professional look you can buy an
aluminum fighting cane
