I bet within 10 years Robots will be in most warehouses. You may have 1 or two employees watching the bots.

Automated filing has been a thing since the 60s. (Opening credits from The Prisoner).

Not sure how it reaches the lower drawers.

Hubby and I just went to a new car wash that is entirely automated, having different sections of the wash doing different jobs. The whole thing took about 12 minutes and the car looked great. It was a ballet of moving metal arms washing the car. Not a human in sight.

I have said on this website before that we do not need 3rd world immigrants to do these menial jobs anymore, automation is taking care of it; and, that includes agriculture where the picking machines are becoming very good at picking fruit off of trees.

Slightly related.

Back in the ‘80s a company was selling the manufacturing company I worked for an Automated Storage and Retrieval System.

I talked with one of the reps, who told this “oops” story. Up in Detroit, they had just installed a system that would automatically store cars in a beehive-type of grid about six stories high. They were doing a demo using brand new Cadillacs and kept hearing “plink”, “plink” as car was loaded into it’s bay. After ther five minutes of this, they shut down the system and went under the bays to see what was causing the noise.

They were ankle deep in wing mirrors. Whoever designed the system allowed only for the exact width of the car plus a few inches in order to cram in as many as possible.

They forgot how much the wing mirrors stuck out and as each car went in, the mirrors were sheared off.

Here they were in a monstrous warehouse and they had to take apart and expand each grid a few inches.

Oy vey.
