Now this is ironic, since CT removed the tollbooths in the early 1980’s because, after wages and expenses, the tolls weren’t actually bringing in that much money.

While that was certainly part of it, the biggie was the toll crash that killed a bunch of people.

“Georgia eliminated their one tool booth not long ago.”

Yes, I bought it at an auction and keep all of my tools in it.

Now.
I left NY on short notice with plenty of angst, soon realized it was a good idea.
Just do it.

Yep, the tech has now surpassed E Z Pass. Here in NY the sensors are such that even slowing down is no longer necessary. If you have EZ Pass the sensor picks it up. If not multiple cameras recors your passing and a bill is sent to you. And now a few states are looking into chipped license plates which can be read by sensors anywhere, invluding PD vehicles. Big Brother is growing bigger.

Lived in Fairfield County CT for 16 years ... from ‘76 to ‘92.
Early on in my CT years there were tolls on I-95 & the Merritt Parkway. By the time we left CT in ‘92 they were gone ... still have some toll tokens (in a box somewhere)left over from the Merritt Parkway days.

“So you had two choices, 455 AC—4 windows down at 55 mph”

It’s a wonder he didn’t get run over driving that slow in the 60’s.

Let me see you drive to Rhode Island without driving through CT or MA. RI is a little socialist State too but it’s beautiful. Great for a vacation, just don’t move there.

You got me thinking about RI. One hears most of the states mentioned over time in the national news. But one rarely hears RI in the news. What do people do in RI?

Wasn't the gas tax at the pump supposed to cover road maintenance costs? Where is that money going?

Doesn't stop us here in MA. Today, there is word that they cannot live within their means even without tollbooths - apparently, the credit card fees are too high for them now.

You’re right it might have been 475 AC. It was a long time ago! I remember being with my dad when we drove through Nevada to get to Idaho. The speed limit was “reasonable and proper”, ie. no speed limit at all. 100mph was pretty much the average speed out of the few towns.

House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, D-Berlin, slammed anti-tolling resolutions that some cities and towns are passing as “absurd” and “moronic” in comments Wednesday.

Democrat representing Berlin, huh?

Apart from Fairfield County (a *wildly* wealthy place) Connecticut would most surely qualify as “rust belt”. The stats that I've seen suggest that the people of Fairfield County are leaving in droves.
