IMMHO, they were the kids in high school who craved the attention the jocks were getting but couldn't play nor did they have the musical talent so they couldn't get in the band so they joined the Drama class... and were promptly... forgotten.

Years later this "hole" is still there and even though their Drama class has paid off, the "hole is still there. They want to be important and they know they are not.

So they are still pretending, just like in high school, that Drama is important.
