That quote sounds very fake. The Confederates were already Americans. They were more American than the Yankees, since they were rejecting tyranny.

That quote is widely reported but I suppose it could also be attributed to Caliph Baraq of Nigeria.

The point he was making is that there are no Northerns and there are no Southerns in these United States ... There are only Americans. We've forgotten his wisdom shown even in defeat. Perhaps the young are not even taught this any longer.
