The “census” was probably an enrolling that Augustus ordered in 3 BC, and didn’t get around to Judea until a couple of years after that.

Macronius, a pagan playwright, mentions the slaughter of the innocents, and attributes the famous pun of Augustus, “safer to be Herod’s pig than his son” as referring to this incident.

As far as real truthful “history” the History Channel is only good for real life shows like American Pickers and Pawn Stars. At least the points of history of what Americans have made is revealed in what the pickers find and the customers bring to the pawn shop.
Anything else it does, like the notorious Ancient Aliens earn the channel the truthful title of the “Speculation Channel”.
It only takes a general observer of the History Channel to know that serious Christians would rightly not expect a true history of Christ to come from them. You did even need the further indication of that with the knowledge that Joel Olstein is the producer of the Jesus program.
I watched part of it last night and found some of the details to be overly dramatized. I’m not watching the rest. I hate to see a non-Christian’s view point regarding the life of Christ. It’s not a reverent treatment.
Now it makes perfect sense why I didn’t like it.
The Passion of the Christ is a tour de force.
When a friend or co-worker asks about what the show says, you surely can boast of how discriminating you are. A lead into Jesus as Savior might not be so easy for you to bring to mind, though. “Who do you believe Jesus is” would seem obvious in the context.
The early church flourished like mad in the middle of a society that was so irreverent, that they even tried, and for a couple days thought that they succeeded, to off the Dude on a cross.
If your witness depends on your surroundings being reverent... you don’t have much of a witness do you.
The way Jesus mastered the Cross is a tour de force to end all tours de force.

Are they America’s premier theologians? No. But they do manage to be adamant about the power of Christ to bring good out of bad situations. This is just the message that some suffering people need to get. The quality of your life is a factor of your understanding of the big picture of what it’s about. Not everybody lives with billions of dollars on earth, but all Christians have been given a Spirit worth infinity which they can share.

I suppose that my witness, as you call it, is as good as anyone’s - maybe even yours. What I object to is when a program like this misinforms the population about who Jesus is - not just the Son of God but fully God and fully man. That’s all I meant about reverence.
As both C. S. Lewis and Jesus pointed out, any talk about Him is better than none. But I’d want to see how the program is introduced before coming down with even your degree of a judgment. Is Jesus questionproof? That is a quality which can be expected of a living, omniscient Savior.
Overall it’s a win to hear even the world mentioning Him in doubt. People who want to know more have an obvious answer: a Christian neighbor, friend, or church.
By the way, the bible has quite a specific witnessing scenario and it’s accompanied by Holy Spirit.
It has ruined me. ;) I fight against it, though. :)
