A Verizon worker was suspended from his job for rescuing a cat which was stranded on top of a telephone pole.
Maurice German was working in a neighborhood in Port Richmond, Pennsylvania last Saturday, when a resident asked him to help rescue 'Momma' the cat.

Have you ever seen what happens to the bodies of animals in real life?
They are scavenged, usually by birds or smaller animals.
This results in the carcass being dismembered and with smaller animals the bones are scattered during this process. It would be extraordinarily rare to find a cat skeleton.
Larger animals are sometimes a different story -- I have found skeletons of cows in the woods, but most of the bones are too large to be carried off by a crow, raven, or even a vulture. But even deer carcasses are scavenged and scattered. I find leg bones and sometimes a pelvis part.
When we hunt elk, we strip the meat off the carcass and pack it out, but leave behind the bones, skin, entrails, and whatever meat we can not strip off. Within days, all that is left is bare bones and they are always scattered to some extent.

A friend of mine got stranded on a Megabus for 4+ hours due to an accident up the highway. Every other vehicle was able to exit and go around, but the Megabus was not permitted. Reason: Megabus hadn’t cleared alternate routes in that area for their very tall buses. Once the driver said that, it all makes sense, particularly to those seated in the upper level.
I doubt many people here are line workers, I’m certainly not one, although I’ve crimped a wire or two in my day (to say the least). What comes to mind for me is that there is (or at least can be) a lot of dangerous crap when you’re at the top of a telephone pole, often put there by other companies (like phone and cable TV). If you are given a work order, I would assume that the crap is fully accounted for and any necessary safing is done, or at least ready to be done. If you go to a pole without the paperwork, you’re on your own to understand what you’re dealing with (in other words, what’s hot). Now, an experienced line worker probably knows exactly what to look for, but one with less experience, not so sure - in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if certain people are certified to work certain poles, while other line men are not...at least until they receive the proper training.
By my standards, Verizon should be applauded. They needed to get the guy’s attention, but they still didn’t ruin his career, and most likely, in a few years, this will be all forgotten by the company. People, understandably, have a soft spot for animals...and a written warning may not sufficient to prevent recurrence, sitting home without pay likely is.

Saw one in a tree when KI was a kid...neighbor girl was looking for her cat and we helped her search...was up in a tree impaled by a sharp branch - evidently a wind storm got things moving pretty good and the cat was in the wrong place at the wrong time....other than that, you are correct...cats are good about getting down when they wish to be down...sometimes a bit of tuna at the bottom will speed up the decision....

I’m sure the “tramatised” cat forgot all about it when his little paws hit the ground.
My Dad worked for New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. Every year there was a Gold Medal and money prize granted to an employee who saved a life (human or otherwise) while on duty. Since my Dad taught all Craft Employees CPR and other First Aid measures, lives saved were often a result of his training. Company equipment was used all the time to rescue people and pets that fell through the ice, down manholes, up trees, electric shock victims, flood rescue, etc.
My Dad always beamed with pride when one of his “guys” was a hero.
Isn’t it astonishing? This could have been a feel good story that would have circulated the online news sites (especially if there was a photo or two) and bought Verizon some free positive press, but instead Verizon turned it into a negative that makes them even more disliked.
That makes two of us. I will kill a cat anytime I can legally do so.

There is a reason telephone and cable TV lines are mounted BELOW electric liunes.
