Holding your keys between your knuckles. Rearranging your schedule to squeeze in a daytime workout. Constantly scanning your surroundings. Avoiding running alone in the dark.
Ask any female runner and she will tell you that shes had to take one or more of these precautions at some point when running outside in public spaces like running trails or city streets.
Its not just the fear of assault that keeps women off the streets when night falls, but the tragic murders of young women like Mollie Tibbetts, Wendy Martinez, or Vanessa Marcotte that hit close to home. Because of this, many women have taken to running during the day or indoors. But one group of ambitious women in Chicago decided to do something more to help women feel safe running at night, despite the dark.

Noq, if they just open carried while running they could make the runs really safe.

That or take martial arts
I have a female friend who routinely runs tens of miles alone (in daytime.) She always carries her cell phone. It is always in plain sight. I think the phone probably makes her safer, but maybe it just advertises that she has something valuable to steal.
So woman, alone, can “take back” the streets. They can almost always be overpowered, raped and/or murdered by a man. It is not “empowering” to put your life in danger. Don’t run alone in an isolated area. EVER!

Yes, after Karina Vetrano was killed while jogging in Queens a few years ago it became clear that predators don’t have to be local (so no area is truly “safe”); the mutants will come looking for you in isolated places.
Safety concerns influence every area of a woman’s life. It is one of life choices that women make that often result in less overall lifetime income. I lived, worked, and attended school in some of the worst neighborhoods in the U.S. so that I could achieve my goals. I had absolutely **no** support or encouragement from family and friends, especially the women.
Does a woman go to night school classes after work?
Does she strive to go into one of the doctoral professions because the school is in a certain inner city neighborhood? ( law, medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry etc.)
Does she apply for a particular job because of the hours, the location of the business, or travel requirements to areas that are less safe?
Does she choose a more expensive and safer home or apartment?
I have faced each of these decisions and in every case it was the choice that was far less safe.
“That or take martial arts”
That’s really not going to help a woman against a large muscular feral.
Dont run alone in an isolated area. EVER!
In Chitown, Dont run alone in anyplace but the North Shore. area. EVER!
OK, citizens. It up to yourselves to defend yourself on the streets. Billions of dollars spent on law enforcement? That’s not to protect YOU, citizen.
When seconds count, the police are thirty minutes away.

Ran the Chicago Marathon, and most of the southern portion was through the projects.
Places I would avoid if I was in an APC!
A zillion locals screaming, it was a fun run.
Still, I would not drive that route on a bet.
