Your telephone has nothing to do with your webcam.
Not really. My DSL and internet comes in on my telephone line. There is no cell service in the area and actually my centurylink service is quite poor.

I’m not sure how a VPN is going to protect you from hackers. It will protect you from Google, which is the larger threat, imho.
What is really freaky is when your own number calls you, our when your landline calls your cell.
I set my contact list to one ringtone and let everything else go to the default ringtone.
That way I can tell just by the ring whether its someone I know or not.
Rarely some unknown number will leave a message and its something relevant, like an appointment reminder.
I like a ref’s whistle.
I get occasional calls supposedly from Microsoft tech support. I usually laugh really loud in the phone, then hit my faithful call block button. I don't need their stinkin' scam tech service.
How to disable your camera? I put a big piece of black opaque electricians tape over it.
OK, that will blind the cam. You’d better also make sure your mic’s off, too. I’d strongly recommend software for that:
