Its broken. The MCA feature has bugs that led to 300+ deaths hence the needed software upgrade.
They need to stay on the ground until that upgrade is completed.

There you go. Granted, I'm not jet qualified, but I have been flying since I was 16 and own my own aircraft. I've flown GA planes that were both tail heavy and nose heavy. As long as weight and balance were within limits, you can fly the airplane and there is nothing "unstable" about it. But, this is not like driving a car. There is a saying in the industry that you can't let the plane "get ahead" of you. That means you have to be paying attention at all times, and not be totally dependent upon the automated systems. There are too many pilots out there that are just along for the ride, get their annuals in the simulators, and forgotten how it feels to actually fly the airplane.
Long before me it was noted that bad software design can kill people. Very true. The world we live in has its pluses and minuses.

The FAA is going to make a statement this afternoon. Speculation is that a new fact from the crash site has come to light. All previous grounding decisions have been fact free political decisions. The US grounding may be the same.
The two black boxes have been recovered, but they have not yet been read. Ethiopia could not read the data, so they sent them to Germany. Germany cannot read these new type black boxes. Most likely, only the FAA or the manufacturer will be able to retrieve the data. That would be in the US.
Meanwhile, the cause of the accident can only be determined from the examination of the wreckage and from the conversations with the air controllers. The bottom line is that no one knows the cause of this accident. Politicians are hiding under their beds and making decisions based on proclamations from the media, most of whom have Journalism degrees and only know how to find their assigned seat and only if they have the right app on their iphone.
I think this will be ultimately shown to be a problem with an inexperienced flight crew member confronted with a runaway stabilizer event and not taking appropriate corrective action in time to avoid flying into the ground. If you view the videos on YouTube that show the training involved in a runaway stabilizer event it happens just after engaging the flight director (autopilot) once the takeoff checklist is complete. The sensor incorrectly detects a nose high stall condition and automatically lowers the nose with trim. There is an audible alert and the crew would need to disengage the automatic stabilizer controls using 2 switches and bring up the nose back to the climb rate. This would be something that a well trained and experienced crew should be able to handle. The problem is that the first officer reportedly only had 200 hours flight time. If this is true and not just 200 hours in type then he should not have been anywhere near the cockpit of a complex system like the 737 Max 8. Its usually not one thing but a confluence of events that creates an disaster like this. The cockpit and flight recorders should be able to determine if the crew responded in a timely fashion to the event or if they were overwhelmed due to lack of experience or training.
You mean horizontal stabilizer? If the a/c was pitching up and down I would agree.

It looks like to me, they are moving airliners towards autonomous flight where no pilots are needed. This is similar to what’s going on with autonomous auto technology. Right now, the new prototype designs, like MCAS, are in the testing mode where pilots are present to override them when they fail to react to unforeseen conditions. The MCAS failure should be revealed in the data recorder information. If it reveals flaws in the MCAS system, there will be no prediction how long it will take to fix the problem. And the march to reduce airline travel cost with pilot-less flight will continue with people’s lives as the guinea pigs.
That's might big of President Trump. I guess he could have forced them to travel to the International Space Station pending further orders.
