Anyone know what’s going on with pneumonia? In my life I never knew anyone who had it, up to last month. Now I know two people who had it bad. Neither know each other. Is there something we should know?

Neither of my friends who had pneumonia are over 55 or travel in the same circles.

“Pneumococcal pneumonia can be passed from person to person. You can catch it from a cough or close contact.
Many people think it’s a cold or the flu, but it’s not.

Unlike a cold or the flu, which are caused by viruses, pneumococcal pneumonia is caused by bacteria. Symptoms can be severe and hit you without warning. In fact, it can take weeks before you feel like yourself again—the fatigue can make it hard to get through the day.”

Can illegals be the cause?

Its opportunistic. Until better medications came out for my asthma, I would get pneumonia almost once a year. One semester in college was completely destroyed by pneumonia. When I finally went to the ER the doctor was amazed I walked in under my own power.

I had it as a kid, and it was pretty bad. I think most put it into the category of ‘flu’, and then they wait until they get to a really weaken state to seek medical attention.

I had double pneumonia along with pleurisy about 18 years ago. I was in IC for a week. I guess it was touch and go but the pleurisy was so painful that I was on the morphine joy button and didn’t realize what was going on. They finally put a tube in my side and drained a bunch of liquid. I recovered fairly quickly after that. They sent me home with some Levaquin which came close to rupturing some tendons. It wasn’t a fun time.

I'm sure multiple risk factors are at play, but one possible way to reduce risk: Regular dental visits may help prevent pneumonia, study shows. Poor dental hygiene may also contribute to heart disease. So... See your dentist regularly, everyone!

Fairly common but we generally don't hear about it until it takes out an elderly person.

“Anyone know what’s going on with pneumonia?”

My first wife died of pneumonia at the age of 37. That was 18 years ago. It hit her fast and it hit her hard. She was dead 36 hours after diagnosis.

Was in hospital with pneumonia when I was a child - don’t remember feeling that bad but in the ‘50s, things didn’t always stay embedded enough to be in my mind today....
You probably know a number of folks who have had pneumonia - a lot of the extra congestion and not feeling right during Flu season is milder cases of pneumonia...that’s one of the reasons to use something like Mucinex when you feel something coming on - work to clear the lungs before they clog up.

Last year, at 59 I caught a 5 week long cold that ended with pneumonia. I didn’t feel particularly bad but the flock of hoot owl noises I made with every breath was amazing. It sounded like hundreds of them.

My mother and the wife’s mother had it years ago. They’ve both passed now, but not from the pneumonia.

I caught it 20 years ago from our kiddo via school. Kiddo got well in no time but it took me a month. About the time I got well, bam, kiddo came down with it again and passed it on to me again. That time I was in bed six weeks or more and got shuffled from doctor to doctor who did nothing. One, seeing I could barely stand up, finally gave me some antibiotic which immediately stiffened my joints so bad I was in tears. Hubby found a pharmacist who was understanding and opened up on a Sunday to give me a different med. To this day, to breathe, I have to sit up at night which doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep. But, because I wasn’t elderly, I could never get the pneumonia vaccine.

Pneumonia. Been there. Done it.

Eat wisely & exercise. No alcohol. No drugs.

Keep a survival sleeping bag. Burn off the body chills.
Uncomfortable but it passes.

A great immune system is your lifelong friend.

My husband has had it twice. Three months each time.

I don't know but I had it a month ago and am still sick.

I made it to my desk and thinking about going back to the Dr.

Yes. Get vaccinated against it. Pneumonia is a serious and potentially fatal illness. With other formerly deadly ailments suppressed, remedied, or delayed, pneumonia has become more prominent and all too frequently is as a cause of death.

The flu can make someone vulnerable to pneumonia.
