Since you mentioned Virginia (I wasn’t going to join this slide), I know a Dr. who is from Virginia named Taliaferro. I was told by someone who knew him that the Dr pronounced his name Toliver or maybe Tolifer. Is that the way a southern of Italian descent tries to fit in or is that the southern drawl changing things?

However, upon seeing that name, I would proceed to mispronounce based on my limited knowledge of Spanish.

Guess that’s why we need folks who know the particulars of colloquial language.
