“Court-appointed” son?
I’m guessing it’s more commonly known as “foster child”.
The kid probably came to school a couple of times in dirty clothes, some busybody teacher referred him as a child-abuse/neglect case, and he was taken away from his real parents by some busybody social worker.
Now he’s dead.
