Advertising and data mining. They sell data to marketers who use it to surgically target specific customers who are likely buyers, then sell the advertising and deliver it. Sort of like subscribers to gun magazines can be expected to respond to certain types of ads but far more targeted than that because they know so much about you. That's how those strangely personal ads show up on your computer and phone.

I am a Luddite and have no cell phone, no tv, no devices except a laptop. I mistekenly had FB for a month to view relatives photos but that was a mistake.
