Point shaving?
He was trying to toss it over one of his own players. It was still very careless.
Generally when we think of point shaving, it is an act done by a player to keep points under a total. It would happen when a team is favored to win the game, but a player deliberately misses baskets to keep the score under a total. For instance, suppose a college basketball game over/under total is projected by the odds makers to be 150. People know that team A is going to win, and player Joe is the top scorer. Team A leads throughout the game, but the score by Team A never quite gets too far out in front because player Joe seems to be having a bad night, and he misses shots he would normally make. At the end of the game, the score is 75 for Team A, and 74 for Team B, with the total being at 149 for the "Under."
If a player does an intentional act to cause his team to outright lose, that IMO, is even worse than point shaving. That being said, I don't think James would engage in point shaving or would intentionally do something to cause his team to lose.
