He Went from Kneeling during the National Anthem to Living with His Agent

BRUCE MAXWELL JUST WANTS A FRESH START

After the former A's catcher became the first and only MLB player to kneel during the anthem, his personal and professional life crumbled. Here's what happened and how he hopes to get back to the big leagues.

On a cloudy Sunday afternoon in early February while pitchers and catchers throughout the land report to big league camps, Bruce Maxwell is on a high school baseball field in the spring chill, being shadowed by a spirited schoolboy named James. The afternoon is full of smiles, and it is difficult to tell which of them is helping the other more. Probably, it's about equal.

James is there with the high school's Best Buddies program, an international organization founded in 1989 for the purpose of helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"He's amazing," Maxwell says. "He's got a lot of energy. I love doing stuff like this. It's good for them, and it's good for us."

Plenty of guys with his skills get second/third chances in the independent leagues. There’s a remote chance he could grow up.

A lot of the degree havers of today are still burger flippers.

Too many degrees from too many schools these days train kids for nothing more than threesomes and binge drinking.

I don’t know anything about him, but would bet that he was a marginal player, and that’s why he’s not in a big league spring training camp. Not because of him kneeling.

If you have a choice between two players, and one is a PR liability, you pick the one who is not going to alienate fans.

LOL. Presumably you would be an American League pitcher so you wouldn’t have to worry about retaliation at the plate. ;)

With his skills, that is true. But not with his personal baggage.

Too many degrees from too many schools these days...

True that. Too many dubious degrees out there and too many people who have them with an undeserved sense of entitlement.

We’re starting to see the results of the “Grievance Studies” degree infestations of HR departments in many places in the corporate world now.

“Grievance Studies”

I’ve observed over the years that blaming others is a valuable skill that often protects one’s career. Maybe those degrees are paying off after all. /sarc

Do stupid things, win stupid prizes. Pissing Americans off does have its consequences.

When you spit on the country that gave you such great oppurtunity you should expect it to turn on you.

MLB will keep anybody if they can hit (especially with power). Look at Daryl Strawberry and so many others that played after they had already served time. Strawberry had been arrested 17 times.

Cuba is wild about base-a-ball. He can move to Havana and play in their top league and make maybe forty bucks a month but he’ll have an apartment and maybe relatives in the USA can send him a 12 pack of Charmin every month.
