I can’t wait to look into this, because I’ve been trying for the longest time to find a replacement for Google Voice. (I did drop Google search & Gmail.)

I’ve been using it for quite a while. As slick as ICQ was back in the day.
Nope... wish I was though. U was looking for something totally different and ran across it and said “wait... Whats this”. Then my wife and I both downloaded it to try it out. Seriously cool, check it out.

Viber is another similar choice.
It has the added advantage of being encrypted and is used worldwide.
You will like their privacy attitude! Go read the FAQ’s! :)
This is also encrypted and world wide. I like the developers attitudes, straight up sound like good guys.

I’ve been on a couple of telegram groups for the past year or two. Works great. The rest of the fam uses discord, so I have both on my phone.
I’ve been doing just that. :-)

OK, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. They want to offer a neutral platform and seem fine with offering it for free at least until Pavel’s money runs out. But I am skeptical about people who just offer things for the good of mankind without any return. Maybe altruism isn’t dead after all!
Of course people will use their service to do nefarious things like exchanging child porn or coordinating terror attacks, but in reality they could do those things using any messaging service, and no one is going to sue or prosecute the Postal Service or FedEx for delivering the same things.
One more comment - while they say they will block (for example) “ISIS-related” bots and channels they would have no way to know what the content of a Secret Chat is, because it uses end-to-end encryption. Not that it’s unique to Telegram, but there’s an example where terrorists would benefit from this service. They say they will only give up data “if the issue is grave and universal enough to pass the scrutiny of several legal systems around the world”...which makes it pretty fussy. Clearly they wouldn’t do so at the request of say, the US government.
Unfortunately for me, this is an app-to-app messaging service.
In other words, your contacts must have Telegram also or you can’t connect with them.
With Google Voice, you just need someone’s number to text or call them and they even provide you a free phone number.
I’m not crazy about the fact that Telegram’s headquarters are in Dubai either, so it’s back to Google Voice.
