I read years ago that hot water freezes faster than cold.

When I told an older friend, he said he was disappointed in me, thinking I was smarter than that. I carried the shame of it with me.

Now I find out hot water does freeze faster than cold but it’s too late to wave it in my friend’s face. Phooey.

If you have an equal volume of hot water and cold water, the hot water takes longer to freeze. That is because the hot water has more heat to dissipate than the cold water. BUT--if you allow the hot water to steam liberally, it evaporates, which is a cooling process. Steaming also causes the volume of the hot water to decrease, so there is less heat to dissipate. So, in some circumstances, you can make it appear that hot water freezes faster.

It does, but most of it evaporates.

I tried it when I was a little kid, using two ice trays and my parents freezer. Boiling water/hot water will make ice cubes before cold water. But, they are only about 1/4 the size of the regular cubes.
