In Việt Nam mothers dream of marrying their daughters off to American men because Americans have a reputation there of being the only people in the world who are not by custom and habit wife beaters. A mother with a widowed daughter who has a child or two especially wishes for an American husband for her daughter because American men have the rep of taking a woman and her children as a package while all others, even Aussies and Brits say the child has to go somewhere else. Only Americans will, in that situation raise another man's child.
American men also have a rep from experiences in the war of being quick to help strangers in distress. The rest of the world limits their offers of aid to relatives.
Right after the war in the later 70s it was different because the government promoted hatred for the half caste children we left behind but that changed as the people began to prosper a bit and stopped listening to the Vi Xi (Vee Cees, their term for government people).
