Yep, been there.
Took a load of high school students to Chicago. The bus driver missed the exit and insisted on getting off at the next one. BUS got really quiet as the kids observed a child eating out of trash can, rats running along the cardboard in windows etc.
Finally , little Ricky in his high unchanged voice popped up “ Miss M are there any white folks that live in Chicago? “
I wish I still had Brian’s paragraph comparing the poverty he lived in with the poverty he saw that day. They were country poor, lived off the land (hunting, fishing, gardening). He’d never been hungry and even though he had dirt floors in house mom kept them clean (linoleum) and they had real windows. And a wood stove to keep warm.
