The reason they take in so many muzzies is they envision North Africa and the Middle East as part of that empire. These were areas where France and Germany had major colonies in the past.
European powers have been second-rate since WWII--first taking backseat to USA and USSR, and now to USA and China. The EU is their misguided attempt to get on the same level as the great powers ... and, of course, to provide a focal point for their imagined world government of the future.
The EU is destined to fail, as their socialism destroys economies faster than autocratic dictatorship can be established at the EU level (the only possible outcome of socialism).
