Yes, but a squirrel sized trap won’t catch a coon.
Maybe put some sand down or something that will leave footprints.
I think this is a brilliant idea.
Get a copcam.
Call a critter wrangler
Oh, so those weren't droppings I saw up there. It was your BRAINS. Why don't you go do something constructive and go play in heavy traffic?
One medium size black snake would take care of whatever’s up there.

HELP! How do I get rid of a feral cat?
I don’t hear the animal vocalizing. If I did, I could I.D. it easily. We have tons of grey squirrels living around here, but a city park (with its trees) is not far away. So it could be a raccoon. I’ve only heard it scratching and scuttling around.
Bowls of Ammonia can help too.
Q. Why did the chicken cross the road?
A. To prove to the ‘possum it could be done.
Raccoons are largely nocturnal. Squirrels are diurnal. Have you ever seen a squirrel at night?
I use whole pecans and a live trap near the entry point. Then they will try again in two years. Don't release the ones you catch. They will journey 5 miles to return. Just pellet rifle them.
Dead possum in relatives queens driveway.
Wouldn’t that be bats in the belfry?
What IS a “belfry,” anyway?
I don't speak Chinese. They have taken over this co-op development to the point where it's like 90% Chinese now (big reason I want to move out of state). Even if they heard an animal, they wouldn't say anything about it. There are a few American neighbors still around who speak English, but I normally don't run into them. I don't know if the 95 y.o. lady living next door would even hear an animal running around. Since it usually is running around in the middle of the night, most people would also be asleep. Today was the first day I've heard it earlier than 2 or 3 a.m.
Could be an elephant.
We got rid of 72 squirrels one summer using a Hav-a-hart trap.
If it does not fit and needs more than one pelt, it was a squirrel.
Or...you can use a flashlight and have a look see.
The large ones, that hiss back, and look like a dog mouth but fight like cats, them there are coons.
They will remove your face if you don't duck back down real quick.

You are describing a squirrel.
Gray squirrels do not like to be out in the dark. They will come in before dark, many times just before.
If you find the way they go up to get into your house, like a tree next to your house, a live trap near that tree baited with Peanut Butter is s good choice.
Tomahawk makes excellent live traps for squirrels, too. A few Ritz crackers broke in half just outside then inside before the trigger plate makes it hard to resist. If you get the Tomahawk Trap, get the Easy Release door model. Whatever you do, dont release them a mile or two away, or theyll be back.
I’m sure it’s just Satan’s Dark Minions using your attic as a portal to enter the world to unleash untold damage and horror on innocent people.
No worries.
