The most important people in American politics is the 60% in the middle--those unimaginably ignorant "people" who vote for Obama on Monday, Trump on Tuesday, Hillary on Wednesday, Reagan on Thursday, etc., etc. I think it is just possible that after three weeks, those ignorant pigs, yes, even them, they might wake up and say, "Hey, DJT's been pretty flexible here. The dems are unreasonable." THAT is what we might gain with a 3-week pause in the shutdown. Hoping and praying.
Yeah but, suppose they say that. Then what? It’s not like they’re going to start picketing Congressional offices.
Yeah, no guarantees. None at all. Just looking at a possible good thing.
All hope is not lost.
But for the moment Trump caved. Nancy won.
This is a fact.
You are kidding yourself. The ignorant will remain ignorant, how do you think the Dems took the House.
Pelosi 4, trump 0
You are correct.
The 10% or so of voters who are supposedly swing voters have the political memories of fruit flies. This won’t be remembered by that class of voter, things that happened two weeks before the election aren’t remembered by them. The voters who have no guiding political philosophy they can express, but base their vote on non-rational things like who the media says won a debate or who was ahead in the polls last.
The horrific thing is that they supposedly decide all elections based on who can sway them that cycle. So the dumbest voters basically decided it no matter the result, dem or pub, con or lib.
Freegards
No, I am not kidding myself. I only say it is a possibility.
Also, the dems are not 100% guaranteed to win all elections.
Trump, Reagan, Bush, Bush, Nixon, etc.
Also, we have the Senate, and have had it for years.
We had the house for years.
So to say there is no hope is simply, factually wrong.
Swing voters are the curse of this country.
Trump was banking on winning both house and Senate. Which is why he had red Christmas trees. he was hoping to flaunt it a little in their face.
He has the senate he needs to start prosecuting these criminals. That is his only chance for 2020. It's now or never.
All that you say is true, except I believe it is far more than 10%.
> it is just possible that after three weeks, those ignorant pigs, yes, even them, they might wake up and say
We’re in the same place we were a year ago. We heard “wait til next year” and have had 52+ weeks for people to wake up (Trump offered DACA+ then and Rs had house and senate majorities). I can make the case that we are 2-1/2 years into the argument and the pigs haven’t woken up. If people haven’t sided with us (Trump) by now, 3 more weeks won’t matter. If Trump hasn’t come up with a plan since the same thing happened a year ago (with R majorities then), 3 weeks isn’t going to make a difference.
Maybe Trump isn’t who we thought we voted for. Maybe the swamp is deeper than we thought. Maybe we are wrong in what we want. Who knows? But the last 2 years say we aren’t getting immigration reform (or a wall). 3 more weeks won’t change that.
Your 60% figure is more like 30%.
Possibly. I don’t know it exactly. They are the important ones however. Sadly.
“Maybe Trump isnt who we thought we voted for”
He’s been EXACTLY what I predicted. I had VERY little hope for Trump, based on his life history. Having such small expectations is one of the reasons why, when he does something stupid like ban bump stocks, and hundreds on this site are blind with fury, I simply shrug and say, “Yeah. I expected that.”
I voted for him for ONLY 2 reasons: the wall, and LOCK HER UP.
So, yes, I was a bit disappointed when he caved on LOCK HER UP even before inauguration, but I always held out hope for the wall, and still do.
And for God's sake send Kushner and his daughter packing. A disaster.
Besides, who else is out there anyway?
There is no White Knight out there to save us.
Good news. Hope is not lost. :)
People knew Trump was a master negotiator coming in to office. Once there, they no longer want him to use the tools of negotiation which have brought him success. Now, everything he says is perceived as the bottom line, the end of the road etc.
He had acquired the funds needed to build the wall way back when he got funding for the military. He hasn’t use those funds yet - for a reason. He’s noted he could declare a state of emergency and even many lefties agree that he can do it, but he hasn’t. He has reasons for what he does and if he tells us, the exposure costs him the advantages he’s cultivated.
One way to negotiate, is to set a “red-line” and then finally concede that red-line, making the other party feel like they’ve gotten the better deal. But this is done to gain leverage elsewhere. For example, POTUS shows that he is conceding a “big” (red-line) point, and then he (and the public) expects the Dems to concede their big point.
I don’t know what angles and optics he’s negotiating for - the above is an example. I am NOT a negotiator, but I recognize one when I see one.
POTUS says things just to upset the left sometimes, and they run upstairs stomping their feet real loud, and slamming doors, and when they get to their rooms, they play their music real loud - like petulant children. This exposes the reality of the left in a way that CNN never has.
And while this is happening, it just seems like some of Trumps’ supporters seem to panic, and worry that the left’s accusations against him might actually be true.
I am calmer as I wonder what’s going on, because he’s still done more than any other POTUS, some of his accomplishments were thought impossible (North Korea) and all the while, many on both sides were yelling, “OH NO! Look what he just did!”
I call congress critters and message the White House for what I want to see happen, and I vote and encourage others to vote, as is my right. In the meantime, I watch his academy-award-worthy negotiating Kabuki theatre with genuine interest. I can’t think of anyone else who could handle the challenges he’s dealing with better - I’m content.
