Digital First Media, a hedge fund subsidiary known for gutting newspapers, is seeking a hostile takeover of money-losing Gannett and its properties

gonna be a lot more “journalists” being laid off ... gonna be a lot more angels getting their wings ...

I was a Rochester Democrat & Chronicle paperboy for four years when the cost was a nickel a day, fifteen cents on Sunday, and all the coins a dime above were silver. One customer gave me twenty silver dollars as a present when I graduated from high school and gave up the route. I walked or rode my bike four miles every morning to deliver ninety-six papers a day.

It was a time when you could believe what you read.Best job I ever had, to get me physically ready and mentally alert, to take on the world. The reward? Ten dollars a week, untaxed.

Makes one wonder why universities still have bloated Journalism departments.

Journalism & political science are easy majors ... classes are full.

You can become Brian Ross or Karl Rove, take your pick.

Benson used to be a conservative, but went off the deep end with the rest of the Republic staff. Guessing he had a fat contract, based on his years of service and the syndication of some of his work to other outlets. With the newspaper business going down the tubes, he became expendable.

You can still make a nice living as an editorial cartoonist, assuming (a) you have talent and (b) there’s a market for your work. Michael Ramirez is the case-in-point. He provides cartoons for both the Daily Signal and the Las Vegas Review Journal, and his work appears in other publications, too. His collections have also sold well. Did I mention he has never wavered from his conservative viewpoint?

Even more amusing, Poynter disabled comments last night because the commentary was very heavily words to the effect, “Good riddance to bad rubbish. You deserve to be put out on the street.” Luckily, I had the opportunity to chime in before Poynter shut down the comments.

Stuff happens. People who work hard and contribute to their organization for years, still get laid off. Why do journalists always think they are above the fray? They’re nothing special.

I always consider the typical college major of these folks - journalism and communication. We’re not talking physics here. Yeah, you get laid off like everyone else.

If they would stop lying and tell the truth about the democrats they would still be in business.
