The Duke of Cambridge today claimed today's mental health epidemic directly stems from his grandmother's generation and the stiff upper lip mentality maintained during World War II.
Prince William made the comments as he joined New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the Mental Health Matters meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier today.
William, 37, said that people learned to bottle up problems from parents and grandparents who lived through World War II, such as the Queen who was a driver and mechanic with the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service and Prince Philip, a first lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
King George VI and the Queen Mother famously posed for photographs in the rubble of Buckingham Palace following a Luftwaffe attack on the royal family in September 1940, encapsulating the Blitz spirit.

I thought the NHS was suppose to take care of all of that.
Part of the problem is when “stiff upper lip” meets the crazy “you’re responsible for *everything*, and can be retroactively condemned” bullies.
“Stiff upper lip” works in a sane world, where the fascists and anti-bullying bullies aren’t going to simply take advantage of it.
Where’s Cromwell when you need him?
In William’s case, the problem is his family, not British society at large. His family is mostly low IQ and full of people with personality and nervous disorders. There are some mentally ill folks in the ancestral bloodlines too (King George III, Princess Alice of Battenberg).
No, he just isn’t blaming the right generation.
I think he should be blaming his daft boomer parents, Charles and Diana, instead.
The Brits and others, when WW I began, believed that it would be not only a short one, but one waged in a way that was not "modern". Germany had developed tactics and "stuff" that had never been used before, so things didn't turn out to be what the other combatants had supposed.
Airplanes were still very new, as were tanks...the Brits were still heavily relying on horses.
And then, there was the mustard gas. :-(
No they didn’t. The Queen Mum HATED Wallace and her Nazi sympathizer brother-in-law!
What a bozo. What does he think got the UK through the Blitz and fighting the nazis for two years by themselves?
Cromwell was, in his way, just as bad, if not worse, than the Royals!
George III had two terrible illnesses but neither one of them was mental illness; that was a lie...due to lack of medical knowledge and gossip!
This new crap, from William, however, is due to his completely unsuitable, INSANE sister-in-law...Sparkles!
He’s right. And this is why Pink Floyd wrote the Wall. An ode to overbearing British motherhood.
If the gossip is to be believed, William can’t stand Sparkles and may have fallen out with his brother over her. So here we have a member of the World’s Most Dysfunctional Family lecturing on mental health, yet he, his brother and other members of his family are probably not saying a word about Sparkles or talking about any family problems openly among themselves, but are likely passively-aggressively and dysfunctionally backstabbing each other (through surrogates) in their ongoing PR battle for popularity.
I always thought it was called dignity.
the ‘stiff upper lip’ originated long before WW2, William. Chin Up, Carry On, has been a British credo since the beginning of the empire. The lesson being, you never disgrace your family name and honor and you never go full psycho and lower yourself to the level of a savage. You find a constructive way to deal with issues. As opposed to savages, who are on permanent full psycho and react emotionally to every issue.
OTOH, when Sparkles first hit the UK, she had loooooooooooooong talks with the dim-bulb, who then drew his brother into it all re their mother's sudden death and had sort of an "INTERVENTION" with both of them to get them to cry and talk about "their younger selves and feeling"! She also convinced both of them to go on T.V. and talk about this, which is WHY I know it's true/for real, as it was reported on in at least three Brit papers, at that time.
Did you read the Daily Mail from whence this article comes?
I did and the the vast majority of the comments are 99.9999999999999999% against Wills now. He used to be beloved, thought of as better than his dad and MUCH better than his dim-bulb brother; not now!
This stupid snowflake Millennial generation, is, for the most part, hapless, helpless, navel, gazing, emotionally unstable nutters; sadly, including this prince.
He’s really not totally off on that. Along with their bravest having been killed in wars for generations.
But was it the wisest thing to say? Probably not.
Eh, they’re mostly German interlopers anyway.
Yes, that and being RESPONSIBLE!
“There are some mentally ill folks in the ancestral bloodlines too (King George III, Princess Alice of Battenberg).”
There are probably mentally ill folks in the bloodlines of lots of families, including mine.
