Dash cameras... Looking for suggestions.

I'm looking for an affordable dash cam system, either front facing or both front and rear facing.

I don't want to have to tear out my headliner or pay big bucks to have it installed.

TIA.

Thanks.

Easiest thing is get one that sticks on the dash or windshield. Just plug it in to a power port. Those things we used to call cigarette lighters.

Look for 1080p recording, at least 120 degree lens. Try to find reviews with sample footage. Some just aren’t very clear. You can actually get a fair unit for $20.

In the rear the easiest is probably to just buy the same unit and stick it in the back window. If you want to see the image when driving it’s either a lot of wiring or it gets expensive with wifi/bluetooth. Then you need a display or smart phone.

The Spy Tec A119 has been real reliable. Also under the brand name Viofo. In all our company cars. It uses a capacitor battery that can handle much higher temps than a lithium powered dash came - only an issue in extreme temp regions like the Desert. Over 2 years and no issues with any of the cameras.

Another good choice it seems is the Yi Dash cam. It has wifi connectivity.

But, for price and clarity of picture day and night, the Spy Tec A119 is the best deal in my mind. Check out Car Cam Central for reviews.

I’ve been thinking of trying the Yi. Any issues with it? I use the Spy Tec A119. What mode Yi do you have?

Thanks. Don’t have WiFi in the truck. Bluetooth, but hooked to my phone.

Good suggestions. Thank you.

I use a GoPro Hero5 Black 128gb with a micro sdcard. Mount it to the dash, up to 4k resolution and great audio, 7 hours of record time when plugged into a power source.

They have saved us a few times, once from a ticket and another time when someone backed into the front of our truck but claimed we ran into the back of them.

On my personal vehicle, I often press the button to save the video of something interesting I have seen. Push the button and that particular footage will not be recorded over in the regular loop recording.

Rove Dash Cam R2-4K at RoveDashCam.com

Portability was important to me to move between vehicles. I bought a larger (64gb) card to use. Lot of recording options. Purchased spring 2018, haven't had any issues with the camera so far (knocking on wood).

I use an iPhone SE and an $11 mount I got from Amazon as a forward facing dashcam. Supposed to be for straight talk, but bought it on sale and never activated cell service. Works like a champ. Reliable high quality video...plus the free apps for when you’re not driving make it almost a cheap laptop. Stick with the 32gb unit and clean out your old video regularly.

Best of luck!

I’ve been running DOD Dash cams for years. They arguably have the best night vision. Currently running a 470W+

I recently bought an Apeman C420 for a big road trip I went on. It was only $50 on Amazon, plus $10 for the card. So far it works fine.
