I knew a couple years ago who seemed perfectly normal to everyone around them. Then the husband suffered a catastrophic injury requiring a long hospitalization and, eventually, nursing home care. That was when “the truth” came out. The mild-mannered public person turned out to have been an abusive tyrant at home. One of his wife’s “duties” had been wiping his butt for him, throughout their entire marriage. His last few years weren’t pleasant. I’m pleased to report that she survived him by many years, living her life exactly as she pleased.
Doing personal care for someone who is unable to do it for themselves isn’t humiliating. It’s the attitude of the recipient that makes it so.
