God repeatedly directs his people to “stand firm” in the Bible. Sandmann said he was a Catholic Christian, and it was because of his faith that he tried to defuse the situation.
I believe that is what Sandmann was doing. He was being bullied, he decided not to retaliate, but he also refused to back down. He chose to “stand firm.”
1 Corinthians 16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
