Childless and childfree aren’t always synonymous.

Would you please explain that? How can one never have had children, and yet still not be "child-free?"

“Childless” and “Child-free” represent two vastly different attitudes regarding the objective fact of having no children.

Childless can include people who wanted kids but were infertile.
Child-free is “we don’t have kids, we don’t want kids, and we’re proud of it”.
