December 18, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he would probably meet with the Chinese in January.
“The two sides are planning to meet in January, according to Chinese officials with knowledge of the discussions who asked not to be named as the talks were private. China’s Ministry of Commerce didn’t respond to a faxed request for comment.”

Mnuchin "sometime in January" and your first post talks about talks on Tuesday that already took place.
I don't think its that one. Q says "awaiting VIP arrival".
Also "senior US official" seems to refer to Mnuchin more than the others.
Or somebody else?
