Bryan Cranston defended playing a quadriplegic in his upcoming movie The Upside, saying taking on the role was a business decision amid the growing debate about expanding casting in Hollywood.
Cranston told the Press Association that hes aware of the need to expand opportunities to others when it comes to casting specific roles, but as an actor, he has the right to take on characters with different attributes and abilities. In The Upside, Cranston plays a wealthy quadriplegic who hires a caretaker, played by Kevin Hart, to help him on his daily routine.
"We live in the world of criticism, if we're willing to get up and try something, we have to also be willing to take criticism, Cranston said, according to Sky News. We're very aware of the need to expand the opportunities for people with disabilities.
"As actors, we're asked to be other people, to play other people, he added. If I, as a straight, older person, and I'm wealthy, I'm very fortunate, does that mean I can't play a person who is not wealthy, does that mean I can't play a homosexual?

Dont even acknowledge the detractors. Ignore em totally. If they persist, tell them to go to hell.
In The Agony and the Ecstasy movie, Michelangelo is the only possibility that I can think of, and he certainly didn’t play him as a homosexual in the movie. Perhaps Wayne was referring to a stage character?
Possibly, the Duke wasn’t questioning Heston’s acting ability but his role model status for the fans. I recall Heston telling Johnny Carson he loved acting so much that he would do it without pay.
Yeah Mr. White, Yeah, Science.
Th Agony and the Ecstasy is a very great and underrated movie. I read Rex Harrison hated Heston and the two avoided each other on set.
John Wayne asked Charlton Heston how he could play a gay guy. Heston said, Its called acting, John. You should try it.
...
Funny, but John Wayne was America’s favorite actor for decades just by being himself.
Christopher Reeve was unavailable.
I’m just glad that Cranston grew his arm back after filming “Saving Private Ryan”.
He’s a big lefty so I hope he’s raked over the coals by his fellow snow flakes
Have you seen the movie tropic thunder? Hilarious and they make wonderful fun of Sean Penn playing I am Sam. Among many other things.
I would LOVE to see the role of a quadriplegic played by a quadriplegic. I wouldn’t PAY to see one, though. Big difference.
Others dye their hair or put on prosthetics.
But Cranston didn't consider become a paraplegic to play the role?
How come they’re not going after Kevin Hart for playing his assistant when REAL assistants to paraplegics exist?
Michelangelo was NOT gay, speculation on that is pure B.S. Michelangelo had an extremely difficult personality, he was volatile, mercurial etc. His large family mooched off him for his entire adult life and that made him mad. He absolutely loathed Pope Julius who was not a very nice nor ethical person. Michelangelo was a very devout Catholic, and he was not gay.
The Agony and the Ecstasy was a decent movie. My favorite Chuck Heston movie is (of course) Ben Hur.
If he had to play only those roles that he knew, he’d be stuck playing a brain-dead liberal retard for life.
He has to defend playing a role? He is an actor. He pretends for a living.
But married to Malcolm’s mom. All bonus points lost. :-)
I left That out
On Purpose.
Unless he’s gone back on his word, Cranston is one of the few actors who, after throwing a fit about Trump running for President, was gracious enough to publicly say, once Trump won, that he was going to make the best of it, and settled right down. Unlike 99% of Hollywood, who are still trying to figure out how to knock trump off, and crown Hillary President. He is a really great actor, and that’s high praise from me, since I think acting is often one of the seediest professions on earth.
There was only one A lister, and he’s dead.
;-)
