Very high flying supersonic aircraft could create this effect, yes? You would not hear the plane especially at night but you do hear the boom. As you said it’s highly frowned upon, because one can actually BREAK windows, to the extent that I’m not sure I’ve ever heard one, but it was kind of a “thing” as I’m sure you remember, in the early days of supersonic jets.

Absolutely.

it was kind of a “thing” as I’m sure you remember, in the early days of supersonic jets.

Doesn't fit the evidence.

The jets you describe result in a linear path of the boom sound.

The sounds described as strange booms etc. TEND to be pervasive and to sound as though they come from everywhere at once--vs a localized source of the sound. Some can sound more from underground and some from more in the atmosphere but they are still pervasive--as though they come from everywhere at once vs a local spot.
