Ideology accounts for, at most, 40% of the votes for any individual. In any election, about 40% of the voters will be for an individual and 40% will be against. All elections depend on getting 51% of the remaining 20% of voters. If a candidate has significantly more money to expend on advertising then his opponent, then, he will likely win. Those non-ideological, non-aligned center voters are made up of hairdressers and bagboys. Many vote on how the candidate looks, how nice his hair is, or how he reminds them of somebody they love or hate. They can’t name one position the candidate has. They just recognize his name. Hence, we got Mitt Romney. The same thing was true of McCain, who once spent twenty million dollars to overcome a primary challenge.
