He could do it privately and then bankrupt.

Immediately:
at least two judges would find it unconstitutional.
the democrats would write a law forbidding it.
IOW, you would need conservative control of both houses and the presidency.
In general, I think making a very attractive financial offer to the property owner to build the wall (which he likely wants anyway) would work. Those with bleeding hearts and unwalled property, will then be overrun with criminal invaders, and would probably have a real change of heart. My concern is more how to protect the private builders of the private wall.
I had the crazy notion the other day that the wall and necessary repairs to existing barriers has been going on all along, with the battle over the funding serving as the cover up to avoid the stupid protesters at the site.
Pelosi will be broken this week, idiot that she is. She think passing a bill in the House that contains no funding for the Border wall will stop the Government shutdown. She is in fro a big surprise!!!
The Senate will not pass it...and, even if it did...POTUS, Donald J. Trump Will veto any bill she passes. Someone should tell Nancy, she has no power whatsoever!!! Game over...Trump wins!!!
POTUS, Trump owns and holds all the key playing cards. Case Closed.
Well under those circumstances we have eminent domaine as much as I HATE it it is for National Security and we are NOT taking their property!!!
"....and he could paint anything he wants on it"
“For an effective wall, you need all property owners.”
Not true!
Narrowing the routes into our country no matter how large or small make illegal immigration far less attractive. The problem I see is already the Texas Counties along the Rio Grande are already Mexican majority, so they may be the stumbling block.
For a buck.
Happens all the time

You mean like we’ve had for the past two years? As far as the RATs writing a law, unless they have overwhelming RINO support to override a Trump veto, there will be no laws in the next two years.
He could, but why risk wasting the money. He could build it tomorrow and the Dems would tear it down next week.
Early on I thought funding it through people paying for sections, getting their name on it, would be neat idea. Companies and individuals could sponsor the wall. The Go Fund Me site that has nearly $20 million is a step in that direction. President Trump could give a fireside chat or similar—he still has not done much to address the American people in prime time. This would be great start. Consider if he spoke to the American people, discussed the Democrat opposition, the failure of even Republicans when they had the majority to approve the funding. Credit Brian Kolfage, offer up a million dollars and challenge Americans to step up and help out as well. Ask Congress to approve matching dollar for dollar.
Why not? Eminent domain of the first 100 feet all along the border, maybe just 50? This is national security issue, not repurposing for commercial purposes.
No.
The land is almost all federal land. If he were to acquire it to build-—which he cannot do while President-—there would be screams of “sweetheart deals” (even if he paid 5x what the land was worth.)
No, there are no tricks, no hidden funds, no secret stashes. If presidents could do this kind of thin without Congress, FDR would have just sent aid to England in 1940.
For an effective wall, you need all property owners.
Thats fine, build the wall everywhere else so that the entire illegal flow has to cross their property
I think the right of way would be the problem.

More of a problem in Texas than the states to west if I understand
ROW the gov’t now has. When the states to the west became a
part of the USA there was a ROW, 60’ held for federal use I believe.
No such ROW exist in TX. But like all gov’t projects it will be
resolved. They take ROW now for roads, utilities, etc.
There are many government programs that can be legally raided to fund the wall.
Compromise. Buy the supplies (at real prices, not government prices), and have the military do the building. Eliminate labor costs and see how far $5.7B goes.
The EPA would sue the crap out of anyone trying this, so as to protect the habitat of the tri-anus wombat or whatever they can dredge up.
