In most cases, AFM starts out with cold-like symptoms and progresses to paralysis,
typically within a week.
Like polio, AFM only causes paralysis in some patients.
Viruses known as enterovirus A71 and D68 have been detected in many patients and are commonly cited as possible causes.
Thomas A. Clark, the epidemiologist leading the CDCs response to AFM :
Until we fully understand what causes AFM, we cant help protect people against it.

Infectious Disease Ping - AFM (polio-like virus attacks primarily youths)
The CDC still doesn't understand the spread or cause of AFM .
The disease seems to spread more frequently in alternate years.

Sorry, but my "Reasons to Panic" list is full for the next few months, what with global warming, the inevitable economic collapse that's always a threat when a Republican is president, the abuse of Timberland boots by Melania Trump ...
I'll try to fit this crisis in sometime after June, if that's okay.

Good example of poor writing:
A polio-like illness... could spread across the US in the next few years, medical researchers fear. The condition, known as acute flaccid myelitis, has struck in at least 46 states in the last four years.
Those statements follow each other in the first two paragraphs.
Hmmm... If 46 states are affected, seems to me the virus as already 'spread across the US.'

Gee, I wonder why the CDC hasn’t examined the incidence of this disease over time to determine where it originated...

Did a quick search on "Non-polio entero virus A68 and A71
A71 - First identified in the United States in 1969, enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. Worldwide, EV-A71 is a common cause of hand, foot, and mouth disease in infants and young children.
A^* - Also causes respiratory illnesses (similar to the two kids who died?) This virus isn't new. Experts first identified it in 1962. In the decades since then, it only seemed to impact a very small number of people. That changed in 2014, when the CDC reported a national outbreak.
Seems like maybe the influx of illegals may be the most likely source......
