Ok, Transformers explode in Brooklyn and Louisiana. Century Link has big service outages. Verizon has big service outages.
This has a rather odd feel about it.

Spectators were mesmerized by the bright flashes of blue that illuminated the cloudy night sky. Folks all the way out in Jersey City reported seeing the flashy lights

Utility pole transformers have a 50 year life expectancy. 92% of those in service are 70 years old. The dielectric breakdown of a transformer is never slow or boring.
A lack of scheduled maintenance should not be a conspiracy theorists playground. This is entirely predictable. Mitsubishi has opened a plant to make them as fast as possible.

The dielectric breakdown of a transformer is never slow or boring. Usually it is, if you are looking for it.
If you are doing regular sampling of the transformers oil you can detect the gases given off from the dielectric break down caused failing winding insulation and internal arching.
If you find it early you can take the failing transformer off and replace it before failure happen.
I work for an electric utility and we sample our big transformers on a regular bases.
Most transformer failures are caused by wild life. Four legged but occasionally two legged as well.

Happened here in Bricktown, NJ on The Jersey Shore on Christmas night around 7:50 pm. Some asshole took a cure on one of the local east/west country roads, slammed into a pole and the power when out for about and hour in my development. I'd say at least a hundred homes were without power. Stuff like this is always happening around my neck of the woods. Especially in the summer. The power goes off around here with a good talking to it seems.
