In the 50s there was a larger selection of goods.
Kaufman’s on W 42nd or on Canal in NYC was THE place.
School boys were all dressed in various OD outerwear in winter. As they grew, coats and jackets were handed down to younger brothers or neighbors. They wore like iron.
Boy Scouts troops on hikes used a lot of war surplus goods...web belts, mess kits, knapsacks, mummy bags, canteens, pup tents, etc.

I remember Kaufman’s from my Manhattan days in the 80s

My girlfriend would buy berets and socks and stuff there...
