To each his own. I have a friend I've known since 7th grade that is an animal and especially a dog man. Back in the 80's he was a big time dog fighter but bailed out when the law got too close. I thought he had gotten rid of all his pits but a few years later I found he had kept this one old dog in a pen out behind his barn with a "Cadillac" doghouse. (Warmed in the winter, cooled in the summer.) It would take him an hour just to feed this old dog, squatting down and talking to him in a soft voice. I never saw the dog stand up and don't think he could.
I asked him one time why he didn't put that old dog down and he answered "I know I should but I just can't bring myself to do it and will not let anyone else".

It has been my experience, that most people wait too long to put down a sick animal, because they don’t want to be bereft of him. It has also been my experience that those same people are ashamed of themselves, afterwards, that they didn’t put their animal out of its misery, sooner.
