Historically, stocks returned ten percent a year and bonds five percent. It does seem to be less the last twenty years, though.

S&P closed ‘98 at 1229, today at 2545, or 3.7% annual rate of return for the last 20.

DJIA was running around 100 in 1920.

Since then, its average rate of return is about 5.75%.
