Beards: Manly or Impossible.

Posted on 12/16/2018 4:30:13 PM PST by RoosterRedux

I have had a big bushy gray beard for the last 6 months...my women friends like it (or so they say) and the rest of my friends seem to stand in awe.

It is certainly an expression of an inner self...but what is that inner self saying?

I have learned to groom this bush without the help of barber. I did go to a beard barber once, but he never asked me where I was headed re: my beard.

We need a thread here on FR about beards.

Folks who have never had one cannot know the joy...and the pain.

I never was able to grow one- the facial hairs are spaced too far apart and come in lighter colored than my (red) hair, so it looks like a dirty face.

Both of my sons grow magnificent beards, though.

I think Rosie O’Donnell looks good in a beard, don’t you?

I’ve had facial hair pretty much steady since 1974

Nowadays it’s very thick and covers my whole face

No bare spots

I favor a van dyke sorta ....not a specific van dyke but a chin beard and stash

Full beards are much more maintenance

When my oldest was a teen he and I would hit the gunshows. He always enjoyed seeing all the wares. On time he asked if he could bring a friend and I said, sure. As we were pulling in he turned to his buddy and said, “you’re going to see a bunch of guys who look like Santa”!)

Try again and give it some time, at least six months.

My beard has always been too thin to really work. However, I can get a nice thick goatee. I just never liked them.

However, a funny thing happened about three years ago.

I’m 65 but look about 45, complete with a thick head of hair with only a few gray hairs that are really not noticeable. However, my beard is about 80% gray. Three years ago I grew a goatee just for fun and got a lot of comments. It makes me look more my age and, as my wife said, more “dignified”. I wore if for about 18 months and it turns out that it my wife didn’t mind the feel of it and liked the look, so I kept it.

I did shave it off for my two daughter’s weddings (both in the summer of 2017), but then let it grow back. I suspect I’ll have goatee for the rest of my life. It’s just become a part of me.

I started watching videos by George Bruno. He’s a barber with a nice beard and a great voice.

I found him looking for stuff on the keto diet, then snooped around a bit on his channel page and found this (as an example):

I’ve only had the goatee for a few years, but I agree. It needs to have a nice sharp edge to it. And even when I tried full facial I still created a neck line and trimmed to that line. I actually thought about trimming the top on the cheek but never got that into it. It became a goatee pretty quick because that is the only part of my face that produces a thick enough beard.

I’ll tell you the truth but you have to accept it. Big bushy gray beards don’t look good on anyone. People only say otherwise because they see you’ve invested a lot of time into it and don’t want to offend you. ---

My opinion is that the fashion of perpetual stubble is asinine. Makes everyone look like a wino.

Agree totally. It seems like about 98% of white males that you see in commercials have those stupid stubble beards.
