Defendants sometime plea to things they didn’t do, to avoid the chance of prison, or a more serious charge. Judges are supposed to determine if the plea is voluntary, and if it is supported by the facts. Defendants who have decided to plea guilty, even if innocent, are often forced to go through a recitation of the facts and agree that they are true, even if they are not. “Yes, judge, I did enter that house with intent to commit burglary. I understand my right to a trial, but choose not to exercise it”. It’s a kabuki that the system goes through to make itself feel better about fascist prosecutors.
