Did he plead guilty to force a sentence hearing, so all of this would come out? If he had plead not guilty, Mueller could have dropped the charges long ago to prevent being humiliated.

That's basically the understanding, supported by Q statements. He sacrificed greatly.

And to facilitate his spilling the beans, knows where the bodies are buried, etc., in the interim. Yes, sacrificed greatly. I’ve always thought the date of this hearing boded well for a Christmas pardon by POTUS afterwards.
