My kids learned all that stuff while they were quite young while we were homeschooling them.
We taught them ourselves as parents are supposed to do.
Us too. My kids were making their own breakfast and lunch at around age 4.
The small college one kid went to had apartments not dorms. Each student was responsible for all his own meals. No big shake for my kid. Same for laundry.
All know basic car maintenance etc. It’s called life.
This pathetic generation could never fight any world war.
“We taught them ourselves as parents are supposed to do.”
Yep. I knew how to do all that by the time I was 10.
My parents believed every child should be taught how to cook, clean, sew, balance finances, work on/repair any type of vehicle or farm implement, raise a garden, slaughter/skin/butcher any type of animal, you name it and we were taught it by our parents by being involved in everyday life.
Heck, I had to teach my first wife how to cook!
A sure sign that marriage was in trouble from the get go.
I showed my daughters how to change tires.
Then I bought them AAA.
Me too. But for kids that might live in a household were both parents work, or a single parent, or in the city, they dont have the lessons we had. We grew up in a different time.
These days, Teaching kids a bit a self reliance is a good thing, dont you think?
You’re right metmom. These things should be taught at home by the student’s parents. That’s how I learned these things. If the parents fail to take responsibility for these things, then good on the school system for taking up the slack.
I can remember sitting next to my Dad as he did the family taxes, explaining how to do that.
Same with a flat tire. We purposely let the air out of one of the tires so I and my brother could get that experience.
Cooking? Well, my Mom tried but I wasn’t much into it :)
Shame on the parents for not doing these things.
Another thing I learned from my Dad was how to balance the checkbook.
