‘Adulting Day’ teaches local high school seniors how to cook, change a tire, pay bills

Seniors in the class of 2019, however, received one-on-ones with people from the community - teaching things like dorm-room cooking, changing a tire, credit cards and financing. It was an event Christy Hardin, director of the BCHS Family Resource & Youth Services Center, organized for the students. “I think that the idea occurred to me originally, I saw a Facebook post that parents passed around saying they needed a class in high school on taxes, and cooking,” Hardin said. “Our kids can get that, but they have to choose it. And (Wednesday) was a day they could pick and choose pieces they didn’t feel like they had gotten so far."

In all the years I was teaching, I never saw the new homemaking kitchens being used. “Homemaking” was changed to “Life Skills” except it was all team building rather than meaningful life skills. However, two years ago they started a pro culinary class so maybe those kitchens are now being used (who am I kidding, they were probably demolished and new updated expensive restaurant equipment installed).

We now also have a cert nursing class and a drafting class. We’re rural so have always had FFA but no shop class.

You are not a real driver unless you can drive a car with a manual transmission.

You probably don’t even believe in automatic choke, either.

Like my uncle once said of a new car, “Too many automatic houtices."

If you can drive an old Army 2 1/2T truck with an unsynchronized transmission because you know how to double clutch, then you are a real driver.

High school kids hate these “econ” courses. They’re stupid, taught by teachers who haven’t a clue about the real world, and run by vendors who oversold the curriculum to the school systems.

I’ve worked w/ many kids across the country who have suffered through these courses.

A better solution would be to require Home Ec before dropping out of high school or community college. If not, finish your damned degree...

Store bought grated cheese has a coating on it to keep the graded pieces from sticking together. You’re better off buying a block of cheese freezing it and then grading it. Freezing it makes it a lot easier to manage and you can also use a food processor to grate it if cheese is Frozen.

You’re right metmom. These things should be taught at home by the student’s parents. That’s how I learned these things. If the parents fail to take responsibility for these things, then good on the school system for taking up the slack.

I can remember sitting next to my Dad as he did the family taxes, explaining how to do that.

Same with a flat tire. We purposely let the air out of one of the tires so I and my brother could get that experience.

Cooking? Well, my Mom tried but I wasn’t much into it :)

Shame on the parents for not doing these things.

Another thing I learned from my Dad was how to balance the checkbook.

I taught all my kids that and when they went off to college, they were some of the few who knew how to take care of themselves.

And they are all in their late 20’s and doing well, have jobs, pursuing grad work in fields that will actually earn them a living.

Second Amendment proponents.

Enough to make a parent proud.

Totally off topic ... DD has told me she can’t stand grated cheese because it tastes different. Now it makes sense.

Freezing the cheese sounds like an interesting trick although I don’t find it all that hard to grate even when it’s room temp. What does the freezing do that helps?

“WTH happened to Home Economics, Wood Shop, Metal Shop and Auto Shop?“

I suppose they were victims of cost issues, liabilit concerns, college prep focus and lower student interest.

Thanks for that, but I’m well aware of the additives. I carefully scrutinize the labels and shop by brand as well.

I find it ironic that Whole Foods has banned the mold inhibitor Natamycin but gleefully utilizes Canola oil in their hot bar foods.

Potato starch is the other common additive in the brand I purchase. Harmless, unless a person is a carb-free fanatic.

The one to be concerned about is Modified Food Starch, a form of flavor enhancer and an excitotoxin.

You haven’t been around a high school in a while, have you?

Nope. I'd be considered a creep and the SWAT teams would have me on the pavement tout de suite. I graduated in '77.
