The greatest happiness in life, is to love and be loved. --George Sand
Brought this up with some people last night, and I was at first really taken back by the number of those there, who disagreed with this statement. Am interested in the how fellow Freepers think on this.
You could almost cut it down the middle with 1/2 of the group agreeing that the greatest joy is to love someone, and the love is returned. I would say their politics was clearly more conservative, and they were Christian.
Then you had a third who found happiness purely in giving to others, and it didn't need to be returned. I would describe that philosophy, as "Happy as a Dog." Whereby dogs, love and they don't need to be loved back, in fact they like being treated like dogs.
This group, were apolitical, mostly Christian, but also some military spouses.
Then you had the last group who found happiness within them, and didn't need anyone else. Happiness to them was watching a movie, reading, enjoying a walk etc etc alone. Throw in a friend or too to share things with, and that's fine, but to them happiness is "to be love."
This group, pretty much liberal, democrats, pro-abortion (of course), divorced and with some long term relationships that went sour...with grown up kids still in school.
I think it's rare, but the ultimate happiness in our lives is to find someone YOU love, and that person LOVES you back as much, and it lasts, not just for a few weeks or months.
This is not to say that "loving" doesn't have its hurts, or that to love unconditionally is easy, but when it is easy, it is happy, and maybe very few people have had that.
You think of your kids when they're young. Happiness to them is being loved and being and sharing their happiness with you. Then some in their teenage years, become introspective, and they don't want to share their feelings with you, and they may not even show their love...and that can hurt.
Anyway, any thoughts from the group?
They’ll come back around. The best thing a man can do for his kids is to love their mother.
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!
Khitan General: [Cheers]...That is good.
Not all agree with Christian definitions. The Western world has been moving toward paganism for a hundred years.
Another common paen to Hedonism:
He who dies with the most toys wins.
A very destructive philosophy.

Yes, because he who dies with the most toys still dies.
Listen to this song

Yes, I know this song well, and at first glance, I assumed it was common knowledge, but in reality, few people have experienced it, and fewer still believe it.
Happiness is the joy that I can give myself. IT’s as clear as a bell.
I love to go to the movies, but our lives are now set up, that seeing a movie at home, (not even renting one and bringing home), but your big screen TV...in your ten room house... with all the other trappings... is happiness.
Coincidentally(?), that quote was the solution to a cryptoquote/cryptogram that I solved in yesterday’s paper.
How do I feel about it?
These were on some tapes I made for my wife in 2004:

Did I forget to tell you that it came from the Cryptoquote that I MUST do every day. Did you do today’s? I’m not sure about the first word?
I’m to save your moniker, as I now have someone to share the CQ with each morning during the week.
Pookie as in from Soupy Sales?
Yes, you did forget, but I had a feeling it was from there. If we have the same CQ, today’s 1st word is “Fires”...
Yep! It’s a good one.
MArriage A great one. Is like gold platinum and a billion $

Thanks, BLL!
Pook,
Did you today’s cryptoquote?
Nick
Yes, I do it daily.
Don’t fight a batter if you don’t gain anything by winning? Who is the author?
I started this today. Want to join me?

I guessed the author incorrectly (Edwin Dorrel); it was Erwin Rommel. Can’t join the daily thread. Already do 2 cryptos, a Ken-Ken & a Sudoku daily...& on Sunday, 5 cryptos, a Ken-Ken, a Sudoku, a jumble & one other whose name I forget...
