Sure wish I could install Mojave... sadly, my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) was left behind - this despite later produced macs with lesser specs ARE supported... go figure.
Haven’t been able to bend the budget to upgrade my MBP, but am drooling over the i7 6 core or even the i9 models... sigh.
Solid advice, for sure!
Really??? What makes you think that? I’m not looking for an argument, I just haven’t heard that kind of stirring. Yes, there have been some complaints about lack of focus and some quality control issues (and mostly deserved).
That means making an exact copy of your boot drive to another hard drive (or SSD - solid state drive). There are various apps that you can obtain that will get the job done. The one I use is Carbon Copy Cloner, which you can use on a short trial basis without buying. I bought it because I use it often. Or you can buy a hardware alternative that will copy drives. I don't do iCloud backups because it does take forever, especially if you're dealing with 500GB or larger drives. One hiccup and the backup is a mess. A local backup is fastest and more under your control. Speed depends on the connection - USB3 is okay but it will still take many hours to complete the backup.
Make a good backup of your boot drive, and test the backup by booting your MacBook Pro from it. (Search for "Mac boot from external drive" and it will explain pressing "Option" key while booting to select an alternative startup drive.)
It's good insurance to have a backup of your drive. Even if you have Time Machine backups. A clone is an easy way to boot and refer to your previous setup without having to go through a Time Machine restoration.
Thank you for taking time to explain that.
