How VERY IRONIC to be closing this gallery just as we come to the GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY of the SUCCESS of the JFK PLEDGE! Almost like the Smithsonian wants us to forget Apollo 7 (Oct.1968) through Apollo 12 (Nov.1969)! 13 months of rip-roaring successes that almost seem mythic in today’s environment.
Funny you should say mythic.
Buried in the press release on the closure of the exhibit FOREVER - “The exhibit will be closed as the Smithsonian has now received documents from NASA indicating that men never did reach the surface of the moon. It was all done on a Hollywood set, at a time when the Cold War had reached it’s peak.”
I imagine it will take longer for the remodel - but it would be cool if the NEW exhibit could open next year for the Golden Anniversary of the first landing on the moon? I mean Hollywood set?
That's what I found strange. Couldn't it wait until after the anniversary? I would have thought that the artifacts would have been spiffied up *for* the anniversary, not shuttled off to a government warehouse.
