Short of creating two countries I’ve not heard of a solution to what Lincoln faced.

And what would have been the problem with that? Plenty of the editorial writers in the North suggested letting the South go in peace. Other Christian countries eliminated slavery peacefully.
And BTW, the second country had been established. It was called the Confederate States of America. It issued its own currency and postage stamps. I believe it was recognized by some European governments, though without checking I cannot be sure of this. Lincoln just had to let it be. Instead he attacked it.

For me personally it would be a problem because I don’t speak German very well.
I suppose if you want to deal in counterfactuals, its much more likely that the North and South would have reunited after a time. And BTW, the Russians defeated the Germans, not us. (Also FTR some of my family never got out of Germany.)
